Foodie Fiction

After reading “Fiction for Food Lovers” on epicurious.com, I was reminded of one of my earliest foodie book memories: “Little House in the Big Woods” by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

While many people only think of the TV show, “Little House on the Prairie”, some of us fondly remember the books that Wilder wrote that inspired the show. They are a treasure that formed some of my earliest memories and my love of reading.

I was in the second grade, and I had the most wonderful teacher, Mrs. Appling. We read many chapter books that year, but the one I will always remember is “Little House in the Big Woods”. There are many descriptions of the foods Ma cooked for the family, one of the most memorable being the people-shaped pancakes. Mrs. Appling brought in a griddle and made them for us after reading that chapter in the book.  I remember thinking what a treat it was to get to eat pancakes at school – especially in the classroom!

What book(s) from your childhood have foodie memories attached to them?
